Following all excitement about France hosting the Summer Olympics in 2024, we thought it would be fun to answer the question: “How do you say the Olympic Games in French?” The answer: les Jeux olympiques. Jeux Olympiques = Olympics games in French

Word origin

The French word jeu (game) comes iŏcus in Latin. The word olympics comes from Ολυμπιακός (olimpiakos) in Greek, meaning “from Olympia or Olympus”.

Example sentences

In this first example sentence, auront lieu is the future tense of avoir lieu (to take place). There are two main ways to say “year” in French: an and année.

This next sentence use the reflexive verb se tenir which means “to take place”. Tenir in the non-reflexive form means “to hold”. Été in French means “summer” and is also the past paritciple of être (to be), meaning “was” or “have been”.

Les Jeux olympiques d’été se tiendront à Paris du 26 juillet au 11 août 2024.

The Summer Olympic Games will take place in Paris from July 26 through August 11, 2024.
