Espèce in French translates literally to species, variety or type but the form espèce de + noun is the quintessential way of expressing an insult. For example, “espèce d’imbécile !” (you damn/darn fool!).

For this first example, imbécile can translates to moron, fool or idiot. This sentence is in the imperative form.
